German handball players will have to be without Tim Hohnke throughout the Olympics.
The right-winger from champions Magdeburg will not play in Paris after he injured the plantar fascia in his left foot seconds after Germany’s opening match against Sweden (30:27). The German Handball Federation (DHB) made the announcement following an MRI on Sunday morning.
“It was very painful for him and for us to have such an injury just a few seconds later,” national team coach Alfred Gislason said. The fact that only one player can be named in the 17-man Olympic roster will “force us to make some changes in the next few days. It means you have to think very creatively.”
For Hohnke, Kiel left wing Rune Damke will be included in the 14-man squad for Monday’s second group match (9am/ARD and Eurosport). There is not a right-winger among the players set to receive follow-up nominations in Paris. Circle player Justus Fisher and goalkeeper Joel Boreham are now available for further adjustment despite injury.
DHB sporting director Axel Kromer said: “The fact that we lost Thiem just seconds later is very painful and I feel very sorry for him. “Unlike the European Championships or the World Cup, we have no chance of replacing him in the competition. he.
