Before that, the 70,000 spectators in the stadium witnessed a journey back to the future, in search of the Olympic spirit and rediscovering it. A “golden traveler” from space floated down from the stadium roof as Cruise’s artistic preview, and then pianist Alain Roche suspended his grand piano vertically above the stadium. The message: Paris breathes new life into Olympia and its spirit.
The closing ceremony also showed how vast the contrast between Paris and Los Angeles can be. There is Paris, and the city itself is a star. Los Angeles, with its Hollywood and its movie and music superstardom, will likely make the 2028 Olympics one big beach party, one big show for everyone, for everyone in the sun-kissed state on the Pacific. It’s like the 16-day Super Bowl in the Olympic rings: there are performances, there are stars – and most importantly: action.
For LA28’s demo, we quickly switched live from Paris to the Pacific Ocean, where the Red Hot Chili Peppers were rocking out, the sun shining brightly in the sky, and the blue sea in the background. She was followed by Grammy and Oscar winner Billie Eilish, and now Snoop Dogg, back in California.
“We’re excited to showcase the best of Los Angeles,” said LA28 organizing director Casey Wasserman, adding that the Stade de France brings fans “incredible performances” to a global audience. We got a taste of what “what awaits you in 2028”. In 1,433 days, the Olympic flame will be lit in the iconic stadium. But before that, there’s the Milan/Cortina Winter Olympics (6-22 February 2026).
