Olympia Odos: A fatality in 2023 – 2024-04-03 16:26:20

Impressive are the figures of Olympia Odos for its contribution to the steep increase in road safety conditions, as the operation of the motorway contributed to a 96% reduction in accidents.

In the Corinth – Patras section in 2023 there was only one fatal traffic accident, while in the Eleusis – Corinth and Perimetriki Patras sections there were 5 fatal traffic accidents.

The death rate from 3.86 in 2008 has fallen to 0.71 today, while in 2022 it had fallen even lower to 0.20.

The importance of the project in improving security conditions is also demonstrated by the evidence of the large exodus on Clean Monday.

Specifically, in the three-day period of March 14-16, 135,000 vehicles passed through the Elefsina tollbooth, while 44,100 vehicles passed through the Rio tollbooth.

On the way back, on the two days of March 18 and 19, 85,300 vehicles passed through the Elefsina tollbooth and 28,200 vehicles through the Rio tollbooth.
During this entire period (March 14-19), 272 incidents occurred along the highway, of which 185 involved a stationary vehicle and 23 involved a traffic accident.

The president and managing director of “Olympia Odou”, Panagiotis Papanikolas, in the context of a presentation of the actions of the Institute for Road Safety, “Panos Mylonas”, said that the fulfillment of the mission of the new highway is demonstrated by the fact that no one can now imagine the route from Athens to Patras without the Olympia Road.

“As a manager of a public road infrastructure, our main concern is the improvement of road safety and the continuous expansion of our services. Since the start of the Concession in August 2008 until today, there has been a 96% reduction in accidents in Corinth-Patra and 82% in the entire network. Tangible example, the last three days, where our people managed 272 incidents, of which 23 were accidents with material damage and none of them were accidents.”

It should be noted that 200 traffic management workers are employed on the highway, 24 hours a day, and with the Traffic Management Center in Nea Peramos, the road is monitored at all times, along its entire length, while if for some reason it is shut down, there is similar center at Rio station.

Referring to the awareness of society and the education of young people in road safety issues, Mr. Papanikolas added: “As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility, to date we have trained together with IOAS 15,000 students from schools along Olympia Road, we are carrying out campaigns information and awareness on social media and we host students and pupils in our facilities” and concluding, he observed: “A modern highway of European standards is in itself the answer to the basic issue of road safety, however, the need to minimize the possibility of human error remains a challenge for us, because the goal we have set together with our major shareholder, VINCI Concessions, is “zero accidents”.
