The Swiss Jan Scherrer wins Olympic bronze in the halfpipe.

The St. Gallen shone with a trick he invented himself.
-
He can’t realize his success yet.

He developed his trick while the ski areas were closed due to Corona.
Compared to 20 minutes he had already announced it. He said: “The plan is that I make this jump.” And indeed: The 27-year-old kept his promise and completed the second of three runs in the halfpipe final at the Olympic Games with the “Switch Alley-Oop Double Rodeo 1080 Indy to Nose” – or in other words: with the “Jan Tonic ». This has not been jumped by any other athlete to this day. Scherrer scored 87.25 points, winning Olympic bronze behind Ayumu Hirano of Japan and Scotty James of Australia.
After that, Scherrer was stunned and mightn’t really believe his success. The 27-year-old completed a marathon of interviews, then he went to the doping control before answering questions from journalists once more. “I haven’t had time to enjoy the whole thing,” says Scherrer with a broad grin. “I think I’ll only realize success when I’ve been able to call everyone and have a moment to myself.”
Marriage, Olympic medal, child
He met Sasha Scherrer, his wife, very briefly on the way to the doping control. “I was able to talk to her super fast,” says the bronze winner. Compared to 20 minutes he says: “She is shocked, can not believe it. And neither can I.” Everything went so fast now. “I got up at six o’clock and then I asked myself: Who had the crazy idea to start this final so early?” And now he’s just standing here and I’ve won bronze. “It was definitely the best ride of my career.”
And what was that crazy six months for the St. Gallen? In autumn he married his great love, now he will soon be a father. At home in Switzerland, his pregnant wife shared the fever. “At some point I thought: ‘Is all this a bit much?’ But in the end I realized: The whole thing helps me. When I’m not snowboarding, I’m thinking regarding other things, regarding my family. That is good for me.”
Then he thinks back to the last two years and tells amazing things: “Thanks to Corona, I now have an Olympic medal.” He explains: “Two years ago, all ski areas closed, I mightn’t board anywhere anymore. But Swiss-Ski provided us boarders with an inflatable Big Air ski jump.» And then he was creative and the idea of the trick came to him. But now he wants to digest and realize the success for the first time. “I’ll probably wake up a few more times the next night,” says the St. Gallen and laughs.
