Israel – Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert criticized current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his policy, stressing that his government had become a danger and waging an aimless war, and called for his dismissal as soon as possible.
Olmert, who is one of the harshest critics of the Netanyahu government, said in an interview with Al-Majalla that the current prime minister is jumping in the dark, and “he must be dismissed as soon as possible.” “We need to know the end of this war and what vision Israel might have for the future.”
Olmert, who served as Israel’s twelfth prime minister from 2006 to 2009, criticized the Ministers of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, saying: “Ben Gvir and Smotrich have nothing in mind other than the idea of Armageddon (the end-of-the-world war).”
He explained that the time has come for the Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank to have a political horizon, noting at the same time that the October 7 attacks made it difficult for the Israelis to accept a Palestinian state.
Olmert said, “We must rebuild the idea of the state once more because we do not want this young generation, my grandchildren, to believe that the future can only be a future of wars.”
The Israeli politician added that the Netanyahu government has no plan or goal for the war it is waging in the Gaza Strip, nor can it have the answer, indicating that there will not be a complete and comprehensive destruction of the faction movement, because the faction movement is an idea like any ideology, and there will always be Young Palestinians carry weapons and shoot unless there is a political direction, hopefully, unless there is a political rise, and unless there is a specific strategy that provides six or seven million Palestinians with some kind of political horizon that helps create new momentum.
Commenting on Netanyahu’s statement that he is “the only one who can prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state,” Olmert said: “Unfortunately, the only explanation for this means occupation forever,” and “this position, among various reasons, strengthens my conviction of the necessity of his immediate dismissal.” My opposition to the Israeli government stems from its apparent unwillingness to search for a workable solution. “I’ll tell you what: I certainly wouldn’t have supported them directly if they had proposed a political strategy that wasn’t inherently synonymous with endless occupation, but I would have been more inclined to listen.”
