The Arizona Diamondbacks announced Monday that they have designated veteran Mexican left-hander Oliver Perez for assignment before the game once morest the Dodgers at Chase Field, among a number of other moves.
The team also activated outfielder Jordan Luplow from the 10-day disabled list, moved up lefty pitcher Tyler Gilbert from Triple-A Reno and sent outfielder Jake McCarthy to that same affiliate.
Pérez, 40, in his 20th major league season, pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in his first appearance with the D-backs in 2022, but then allowed nine runs (seven earned) in his next 2 2/3 innings. In all, he pitched 4.0 innings, had a 15.75 ERA, struck out one and walked one.
By pitching this season, Pérez became just the fourth pitcher born in Latin America to have managed to work for 20 or more years in the Major Leagues, joining Nicaraguan Dennis Martínez (23 seasons), Dominican Bartolo Colón (21) and Cuban Adolfo Luque (20).
Arizona now has 10 days to trade Perez or place him on waivers.
