Olive oil crisis looms.. Will prices reach 150 dirhams?

A number of news websites and social media pages recently circulated news that olive oil prices are expected to reach unprecedented levels next season, based on the expectations of a number of professionals.

After olive oil was not absent from the tables of all social classes, it is heading towards becoming the exclusive preserve of the wealthy classes only, as all indications point to the fact that the upcoming olive season will be disastrous, due to a huge decline in the annual production of olives.

Professionals confirmed that what was circulated about prices reaching record levels this year is actually expected, pointing out that a liter of olive oil is expected to reach between 100 and 150 dirhams, depending on the quality and type of olives and their place of origin.

As for olives, it is expected, according to them, that the price of one kilogram will range between 14 and 17 dirhams, especially the green ones used in canning.

According to professional sources, this year’s annual production is not expected to reach last year’s production, due to the deterioration of the condition of a number of olive fields, as a result of weak rainfall and the cutting off of irrigation supplies to important areas, which led to an environmental disaster in several areas.

They pointed out that it is difficult to compensate for the lost olive farms, as they require a large investment and the return of irrigation from dams, which is unlikely, at least in the coming years.

It is noteworthy that the price of olive oil last year, at the beginning of the olive and oil season, ranged between 80 and 100 dirhams, depending on the quality and region, while the price of olives reached more than 13 dirhams, while some types used in canning reached 15 dirhams.
