What applies now? – The downright lurching course of a cosmopolitan city like Vienna raises questions – securing world cultural heritage

Vienna (OTS) “While the Viennese SPÖ emphasizes at every opportunity how important it is to preserve world heritage, serious doubts are now evident for the first time. The question that arises in this context: What applies now?” said the planning spokeswoman for the Vienna People’s Party, municipal councilor Elisabeth Olischar, in view of the interview in the daily newspaper “Die Presse” with City Councilor Peter Hanke.

City councilor Hanke announced that ultimately the loss of the world cultural heritage did not represent a broken leg for him. “The statement by City Councilor Hanke contradicts the statements made by Mayor Ludwig and the President of the State Parliament, Woller. This lurching course creates uncertainty and many question marks. Has the SPÖ Vienna given up hope of saving the World Heritage following the recently published, devastating statement by UNESCO?” Olischar continued.

Effective measures required

One thing is clear: If the Heumarkt project is built as recently presented, Vienna will lose its World Heritage status. “For more than 10 years, the city government has been mumbling regarding the redesign of the Heumarkt area, for six years Vienna has been on the red list of endangered world heritage sites – six years in which the city of Vienna simply did not manage to come up with a draft of the World Heritage Site to develop the Heumarkt project,” Olischar continued, and finally: “I demand a clear statement from Mayor Ludwig on how the city government stands on the World Heritage Site.”
