The president of the Forum for the Defense of the Republic (FDR) and spokesperson for the ”L’Appel d’Angondjé” platform, Joachim Pambou Mbatchi, drawing lessons from the referendum consultation of last November 16, calls on the president of the transition on the need to take stock of the strong abstention of the Gabonese electorate at the end of the said election. “There is an urgent need for the President of the Republic, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguéma, to decipher this strong message sent by the people and to give answers that are as immediate as they are precise,” believes the former candidate for the 2023 presidential election.
According to Joachim Mbatchi Pambou, the president of the Transition, Brice Clotaire Oligui, “to restore the link and the contract of trust entered into with the Gabonese people, on August 30, 2023, we must separate ourselves from certain figures of the past and surround ourselves with professional political-administrative staff who are credible in the eyes of the people”President FDR suggested.
The strong abstention, associated with ‘’Non’’ expressed by many Gabonese people, far from being anecdotal, appears in the eyes of the spokesperson of the platform ”The Call of Angondjé” as a pressing call, issued to the authorities of the transition, in particular the first of them, to refocus all synergies and resources, without dispersing themselves too much, around the central objective of the restoration of institutions, as well as that they were committed to it.
The Forum for Democracy and the Platform ”The Call of Angondjé” urges the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) to respect the transition timetable, by diligently implementing the post-referendum stages, in particular the development of the electoral code, the updating of the file electoral and the organization of the presidential election, within the prescribed deadlines.
All things for which, Joachim Mbatchi Pambou and his companions ”The Call of Angondjé” are working with a view to preparing a memorandum to be submitted as a contribution in the coming days to the president of the transition, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguéma.
The final results of the constitutional referendum on Saturday November 16, 2024 will be published, after their examination by the Constitutional Court of the Transition, within 15 days following their transmission by the Ministry of the Interior and Security.
The provisional results made public last Sunday by the head of this ministerial department, Hermann Immongault, give the winner by a very large majority, the ‘’Oui’’ at 91.80% (for which Joachim Mbatchi Pambou and his companions campaigned) against 08.20% for the ‘’Non’’; for a participation rate of 53.54%.

How does Joachim Pambou Mbatchi propose to rebuild trust between the Gabonese government and its citizens following the recent political upheaval?
**Interview with Joachim Pambou Mbatchi, President of the Forum for the Defense of the Republic (FDR)**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us, Joachim. After the recent referendum in Gabon on November 16 regarding the new constitution, it seems there was a notable abstention rate among voters. Can you tell us what you believe this strong abstention signifies?
**Joachim Pambou Mbatchi:** Thank you for having me. The high abstention rate is indeed a critical signal from the Gabonese electorate. It implies widespread disengagement and dissatisfaction with the current state of governance. Many Gabonese people are expressing a “non” through their silence, which is a compelling message that cannot be ignored. This underscores the need for the Transitional President, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguéma, to carefully analyze this context and respond with immediate and precise measures to restore confidence in the governance process.
**Interviewer:** You emphasized the importance of building a new relationship of trust between the government and the people. How do you propose this can be achieved, particularly in light of the concerns about past political figures?
**Joachim Pambou Mbatchi:** To restore that connection, it’s essential that President Oligui distances himself from individuals associated with past regimes that contributed to the current discontent. Surrounding himself with credible and professional political-administrative staff is vital. This will not only enhance the legitimacy of his administration but also signal to the public that the transition aims to genuinely address their aspirations and grievances.
**Interviewer:** In your view, what steps should the Transition and Restoration of Institutions Committee (CTRI) take in the aftermath of this referendum?
**Joachim Pambou Mbatchi:** The CTRI must prioritize the restoration of democratic institutions and adhere closely to the timetable they’ve set. It’s crucial that they redirect their focus and resources towards this commitment without dispersing their efforts. This means consolidating all available synergies to achieve a robust institutional framework that can earn the trust of the Gabonese populace.
**Interviewer:** Lastly, what message would you like to convey to the Gabonese people in light of the referendum’s outcomes?
**Joachim Pambou Mbatchi:** I want to urge the Gabonese people to remain hopeful and active in the political process. Your voice matters, and while the current situation may seem challenging, engagement and dialog are essential in shaping a better future. The government must hear your concerns, and it is the duty of all civic bodies, including ours at the Forum for the Defense of the Republic, to ensure that your voices are amplified and addressed.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Joachim, for sharing your insights and thoughts on this important matter.
**Joachim Pambou Mbatchi:** Thank you for having me. It’s crucial that we continue this dialog for the betterment of our nation.
