Oligui Nguéma calls on Gabonese people to take up small trades to reduce youth unemployment –

In his speech marking the celebration of the first independence day under the era of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), Head of State Brice Oligui Nguéma focused on the economic reconquest of Gabon’s sovereignty as well as youth unemployment.

The speech was delivered on August 16, on the occasion of the 64th edition of Gabon’s Independence Day, which is celebrated on August 17. The transitional president insisted on the need for Gabonese to reclaim their economy, a guarantee of restoring the dignity of the Gabonese.

« To achieve this vital objective, we will have to make choices and define our priorities. First of all, it is essential that Gabon enters a new work ecosystem by appropriating small trades which are immense sources of wealth creation. This will significantly reduce youth unemployment. “, affirmed the transitional president.

Despite the measures taken by the Gabonese authorities, the unemployment rate remains high in the country. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), Gabon has one of the highest youth unemployment rates in sub-Saharan Africa (36%).

Control of natural resources

Also, the economic reconquest of Gabon’s sovereignty will involve the control of its natural resources, such as oil, wood, mines, etc.

It is also in this context that Gabon asserted its right of pre-emption a few months ago by purchasing the oil production company Assala Energy.

This acquisition has allowed the Gabonese state to now control 25% of its national oil production. The head of state has hinted that such actions will not be limited to the oil sector.

« This decision clearly shows our desire to achieve this sought-after financial independence. The other sectors of our country, namely agriculture, wood, energy, mining, digital technology, fishing, industry and tourism, will experience the same ambitious changes as the oil sector. “, promised Brice Oligui Nguéma.

However, to achieve these objectives set on the economic level, it is necessary according to the President of the Transition, ” establish a solid legislative framework based on strong laws, guarantees of a true rule of law… which is the ideal of democracy to which we must all aspire ».

The proposed legislative framework will reassure economic operators and should help attract investors to the country.

It should be noted that this first independence day under the era of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), is celebrated under the theme “ the cost of the liberation of August 30, 2023, an opportunity for our rise towards happiness ».
