The five years of support for the AM4 socket promised by AMD have been far exceeded. 300 series motherboards received BIOS updates just a few days ago. At Intel, the 2017 socket has long been abandoned…

The decision to buy an AMD Ryzen or Intel Core CPU depends on several factors, and platform longevity can clearly be one. In this area, the future will tell us what will happen for the AM5, but AMD clearly had the advantage in the past with the AM4: introduced in early 2017, this socket has served several generations of processors. Even today, and despite the AM5 era started more than a year ago by the Ryzen 7000X, AM4 motherboards continue to receive BIOS updates ; impossible to say the same regarding Intel’s 300 series motherboards…
The longevity of the AM4 socket is currently the subject of discussion on Reddit. At the origin of this, a remark from user Yaris_Fan who was pleasantly surprised to see that his Gigabyte B350 motherboard (GA-AB350M-D3H) continued to receive BIOS updates. The latest, AGESA V2 1.2.0.B, actually dates from September 20 ; not bad for a motherboard whose marketing date dates back to March 9, 2017!
More updates since 2021 at Intel
At Intel, in 2017, the fashionable socket was the LGA1151v2, marketed through the 300 series motherboard range. It was then replaced by the LGA-1200 then by the LGA-1700 (from Alder Lake) ; the sequel will be LGA-1851 for Arrow Lake, in the absence of Meteor Lake desktop. This Intel 300 series platform has not received an update since 2021.
The case of the Gigabyte motherboard mentioned at the start of the article is not isolated. A quick look at other manufacturers’ sites confirms that these 300 chipsets still have support. At ASRock for example, the X370 Taichi received a new BIOS at the end of August.
Well, there is still a notable difference with Intel: these motherboards can still be used to accommodate new processors sold at retailers (in this case, Ryzen 5000); it is more difficult to find Core Coffee Lake. At the beginning of summer, AMD also launched new Ryzen in socket AM4. Regardless, this longevity is clearly worth highlighting.
Finally, for AM5, Lisa Su promised that this platform would remain in force for several years.
