Old Kindles will no longer allow you to buy new books

From August, it will no longer be possible to buy new books directly from old Amazon readers.

Amazon is ending support for older Kindle e-readers to access its store. In other words, the e-commerce giant will completely cut off access to its marketplace for certain users of its reader. This is a first since 2007, when the first generation was launched.

The models affected are Kindle International, 2nd generation e-readers, Kindle DX International, Kindle Keyboard and Kindle 4th and 5th generations. Clearly, the owners of these readers will no longer be able to browse, buy or borrow books from their device. But the devices will not be completely obsolete and there is a fallback option available to them. Indeed, they will still be able to make purchases from the Amazon website and then send them to their device. Likewise, all will not be lost as the entire existing e-book library will still be accessible on the device. As a reminder, the old Kindle models have already lost the ability to connect to 3G networks to allow the purchase of books outside a WIFI zone.

Amazon has already started sending emails to users of affected eReaders. As compensation, the e-commerce giant offers them a promotional code. The latter entitles them to a 30% discount on a new Kindle as well as 40 dollars of credit in the Kindle store. In addition, Amazon has not revealed the reason why these particular models will lose access to the marketplace. Lack of modern TLS standards over old ones might be one of the reasons.
