A few hours following the elimination of PSG by Wolfsburg, OL were also released from the Women’s Champions League. Beaten by Chelsea during the first leg at home (0-1), the defending champion fell to Stamford Bridge (0-1, 2-1 ap, 3-4 on pens), a stadium where Lyon had lost the final in 2013 once morest… Wolfsburg (0-1). OL will be absent from the last four of the C1 for the second time in three years.
Back to the wall outside for the first time in their history following losing the first leg at home (0-1), the Lyonnaises, organized in 4-4-2 as in the first leg, took a long time to be effective. Delphine Cascarino (3rd, 39th), Signe Bruun (4th) and Ada Hegerberg (63rd) failed where Vanessa Gilles succeeded, at the near post, on a clever cross from Lindsey Horan (77th). Coming off the bench and immediately interesting in the game, the German Sara Däbritz scored the second goal for Les Fenottes, on a service from the returning Hegerberg (110th).
Qualified until the 128th minute…
Much cooler physically, the Lyonnaises mastered the end of the match, watered by the London rain. But the disappointing Vicky Becho, clumsy in her offensive choices, conceded a penalty, and which will undoubtedly make people talk, at the last second, for a very questionable fault on the excellent Lauren James. At the end of additional time, Maren Mjelde transformed it, to the great fury of Sonia Bompastor.
In perfect equality, the two teams were separated on penalties, in front of 15,000 spectators. And the Blues are through, Renard and Horan having missed their attempt… Winner of eight of the last twelve editions, OL will not be able to defend their title.
