Officials say the catch is not only a new state record, but also a small step toward eradicating an invasive species. “We have asked expert anglers to help us catch invasive bighead carp from Grand Lake,” the department said.
Brian Baker with fishing guide service Spoonbill Wreckers caught the 118-pound bighead carp following casting a line in Grand Lake O’Cherokees, the state Department of Wildlife Conservation confirmed.
Bighead carp from eastern China were introduced to the US in 1972 by an Arkansas fish farmer. But following a decade, they started showing up in public waters, wildlife officials said. It has now been found in Oklahoma rivers and lakes, north to the Kansas border and the state’s southern border to Texas, officials said.
Bighead carp feed on large amounts of zooplankton, aquatic insect larvae and adults, the state wildlife department said in a Facebook post. The post also states that once an aggressive fish is caught, it should not be released back into the water.
