OJ Simpson has died at the age of 76

OJ Simpson, the former football and movie star who was previously acquitted of the murder of his ex-wife and her partner, passed away today (Thursday) at the age of 76 following a long battle with cancer – his family announced on the X network. “Our father, Orenthal James Simpson, surrendered After a battle with the cancer department,” the family’s statement read. “His family stayed by his side at the time of his death, and we ask to respect our privacy at this time.”

In May 2023, Simpson posted a video on X, then Twitter, revealing that he recently “had cancer” and “had to do the whole chemo thing.” He then added that “it looks like I beat it.” Simpson did not specify the type of cancer she had.

In February 2024, a Las Vegas TV station reported that Simpson, then 76, was once more undergoing treatment for an unspecified cancer. Simpson himself posted a video on X that day, denying rumors that he was being treated in hospice care, although he neither confirmed nor denied reports that he was ill. Two days later, in another video on X, Simpson thanked the same people he said reached out to him, adding: “My health is good. I mean, obviously I’m dealing with some issues but I think I’m just over it.”

Orenthal James Simpson, known as “The Juice”, was known in the 60s and 70s of the last century as a gifted football player. He set a college record for yards and even entered the college hall of fame. He entered the senior league as the first pick in the draft and was the first player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season. He also entered the Hall of Fame of professional football.

After his retirement, he turned to an acting career and was successful there, especially in the series “Roots” and in the film trilogy “The Gun Dies of Laughter”. He also went on to a football commentary career.

But everything changed in 1994, when his ex-wife Nicole Brown and neighbor Ron Goldman were found outside her apartment. After a chase that was televised live, Simpson was arrested on suspicion of murder. His trial became one of the most publicized and important in history, when in a deliberate move on the part of his lawyer it became a struggle between blacks and whites in America.

During the sentencing, which was watched live by regarding half of the US population, the jury found Simpson guilty of both murders. About a year later, Simpson was found guilty in a civil court and ordered to pay millions in damages, which he never paid due to a loophole in the law he found in California.

In September 2007, Simpson was arrested on suspicion that he and another group of people entered a hotel room in Las Vegas, and robbed at gunpoint sports memorabilia that had been confiscated from him due to debts. Simpson claimed that the memorabilia still belonged to him. He was prosecuted and in October 2008 was found guilty of a series of serious crimes. On December 5, 2008 he was sentenced to 33 years in prison for robbery and attempted kidnapping. The judge said Simpson had acted arrogantly and stupidly. He was released under restrictive conditions following nine years, and in December 2021 all the restrictions imposed on him were lifted and he returned to being a free person.
