The Ecological Movement of Patras, through its announcement, states the following:
The Decentralized Administration of Peloponnese, West of Ionian Greece with its decision 111828 of 20/12/2023 approved the installation in the Industrial Area of Patras of a hazardous and non-hazardous waste management unit which also includes an incineration section for hazardous sanitary waste units.
Given that: (a) this process has been ongoing since 2018 (b) the final approval of the amended Study for the Unit in question was given while there was a previous rejection decision in August 2023, which was canceled by a ministerial decision of October 2023 (c) the opinion of the West Region of Greece under No. 76 of December 2022, is positive but includes a large number of analytical observations in relation to not fully documented technical options of the Project Study,
The Ecological Movement of Patras considers it necessary before starting the installation of this Unit, which if it proceeds with defects, there is a possibility that it will not serve its purpose, which is the proper management of hazardous waste, but will itself cause air or soil pollution problems. to review by an appropriate scientific committee the points of the study for which the Region made negative comments, and the responses that the project operator gave in 2023 to them, in order to ensure that no major deficiency or defect remains.
Units for the proper management of hazardous waste, in accordance with European standards and the national planning that provides for them, are necessary to avoid the uncontrolled disposal of such waste or its illegal burial together with municipal waste. But they must cover, without doubt, the necessary specifications so that they actually contribute to the protection of the environment and public health and not the opposite.
