Ohtani hit a 372-foot three-run home run to right field from Padres starting pitcher Dylan Cease in the second inning, helping the Dodgers tie the game at 3-3.
The Dodgers fell behind 0-3 after the Padres’ strong offensive line in the first inning.
Ohtani, widely regarded as the best player in baseball, said, “The atmosphere in the stadium was high today and I really enjoyed the game.”
Ohtani, who had never participated in the playoffs before today, added, “He (Seth) is an excellent pitcher and it is not easy to hit his ball, but I really want to hit one.”
Dodger starter Yushin Yamamoto was struggling on the mound. Padres’ Xander Bogaerts hit a 2-RBI double in the third inning to make the score 5-3 and the Padres regained the lead.
But Ohtani helped the Dodgers again in the 4th inning.
Ohtani hit a well-placed off-bat single, and after the Dodgers received an intentional walk, Teoscar Hernandez followed up with a two-run RBI single to right field to regain the lead.
In the 5th inning, the Dodgers stretched the score to 7-5.
The Padres had two men on base in the ninth inning, but closer Blake Treinen struck out Manny Machado to seal the victory, giving the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five National League Division Series. The second game between the two teams will still be held in Los Angeles tomorrow.
