Meeting with the ‘elected comrades’ over lunch
Congrats on winning the election and saying goodbye… Cheol-soo Ahn not attending
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon held a luncheon meeting with members of the People’s Strength National Assembly elected in the June 1 by-election. It is known that it was a light meeting with the ‘elected motives’, but as Mayor Oh is considered as the next presidential candidate, there is an interpretation that this meeting will increase the contact point with the central lawmakers.
According to Dailyan coverage on the 17th, Mayor Oh had a ‘Lunch Box’ meeting with the elected lawmakers in the June 1 by-election on the 11th and 15th in the office of the Seoul City Hall. This meeting was reportedly requested by Mayor Oh, and was a place to congratulate each other on the election victory.
Mayor Oh succeeded in winning the ‘fourth term’ as mayor of Seoul and began his eighth term of office on the 1st. In the seven by-elections for the National Assembly members held along with the June 1 local elections, the people’s power was Cheol-su Ahn (Bundang-Gap, Gyeonggi-do), Young-Seon Kim (Uichang, Changwon, Gyeongnam), In-Seon Lee (Suseong, Suseong, Daegu), Jeong-Ha Park (Wonju-Gap, Gangwon), and Dong-Hyeok Jang (Chungnam). Boryeong Seocheon) 5 members were elected.
The meeting was attended by some elected members of the by-election, who fit the schedule, as well as members of the March 9 re-election by-election and proportional representative succession members. It is known that Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo did not attend due to schedule reasons.
In particular, on the morning of the 11th, many lawmakers were unable to attend Mayor Oh’s luncheon, as there was a meeting of senior and first-time lawmakers in relation to the direction of the future leadership system following the ‘discipline of party leader Lee Jun-seok’.
According to the attendees, very little was said regarding the party at the luncheon. However, Mayor Oh is reported to have talked to the effect that “The party is politically difficult, but Chairman Lee Jun-seok will make good judgments on his own” in relation to the six-month suspension of party power by the party’s Central Ethics Committee.
Earlier, Mayor Oh spoke on the phone with CEO Lee Jun-seok on the morning of the 11th, and it is known that he conveyed a message that it would be better to accept the party’s ethics committee decision. In an interview with the Dong-A Ilbo, he said, “The decision of the ethics committee is mine, and now is the time to be patient. It is time to be patient.”
One attendee said, “It was a place to greet each other with a light meal, and hardly any political talk came out.” “Mayor Oh will lead the city of Seoul well for five years. He said that if there was anything the city would cooperate with, he would do it.”
However, as Mayor Oh is the next presidential candidate, some analysts say that this meeting cannot be viewed as just a place for a meal. One political figure said, “Where is ‘just’ in a meeting with politicians?” “It can be interpreted as starting a movement to secure ‘friends’ when Mayor Oh appears as the next presidential candidate. “They are more likely to win the general election,” he said.
In a recent opinion poll, Mayor Oh is leading the next presidential candidate in the passport. In a poll conducted by the polling agency Research View from June 28 to 30, Mayor Oh won the joint first place with a 15% approval rating alongside Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon as the next presidential candidate for the passport. Meanwhile, last month, a large number of members of the party including Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo attended the “Lee Oh-hoe,” a meeting of the leaders of the party associations in Seoul and the metropolitan area, where the power of the people led by Mayor Oh drew attention.
On the 29th of last month, Lee Oh-hoe held a monthly meeting for the first time since the local election. About 100 former and incumbent party association chairmen gathered to celebrate the winners of the local elections and by-elections. Major figures in attendance include Mayor Oh and Rep. Ahn, former floor leader Kim Ki-hyun, Seoul Party Chairman Park Seong-joong, former lawmaker Shim Jae-cheol, and former lawmaker Na Kyung-won.
