ÖH of the PH Salzburg and State Education Councilor Gutschi to Blimlinger: Standing still if teaching positions were shortened would be a catastrophe

Salzburg (OTS) Maximilian Wagner, chairman of the STV Lehramt at the University of Salzburg and in the chairmanship of the ÖH PH Salzburg, describes the concerns announced today and the lack of a political agreement on the hoped-for and urgently needed teacher training reform – with shortening of the secondary school teacher training course – as an absolute catastrophe:
6 years of secondary school teaching are too long and not necessary. The resulting shortage of teachers must now be addressed decisively instead of continually bringing new stopgap candidates such as career changers and retired teachers to the school. A standstill and political hiccups in the reduction of teaching positions would be an absolute catastrophe.

Maximilian Wagner also rejects the arguments of university lecturers that the shortening is a loss of quality: “Theoretically and technically there is enough available even with a 5-year study period – a lawyer, engineer or psychologist doesn’t study longer and is therefore well equipped. Compared to previous teacher training programs before 2014, the 5-year duration is still an extension.

Sanela Mahic from the ÖH PH Salzburg chairmanship team adds: “Of course, the teacher training reform alone is not enough. A lot of reforms would also have to happen in many other areas such as the first school year, the administrative structure, the administrative tasks and the support services for new teachers at the start of their service. But the reform of teacher training courses is the basis on which everything else stands or falls. Without this we cannot get off to a good start.

It was an important signal from Education Minister Polaschek to address the shortening of secondary school studies. Almost all students tell me that they miss the added value of the extended training and do not get enough practice. Reforms are urgently needed and the fact that one of the most central ones is now being questioned once more by science spokeswoman Blimlinger is a serious setback. In times of a shortage of skilled workers, we should all look for good solutions together and leave party politics out of the equation“, adds Daniela Gutschi, State Councilor for Education.

The appeal is clear: the announced teaching reform is urgently needed and should now be implemented as quickly as possible. Suggestions for improvement beyond this are welcome and welcome, but they should not be played off politically once morest the study reform itself.
