Lhe president of the National Office for the Fight once morest Fraud and Corruption (Ofnac), Serigne Bassirou Gueye, continues the publication of her annual reports, thus shedding harsh light on the realities of corruption and fraud in Senegal. After the 2022 report, the report for 2023 has just been made public, revealing a series of worrying data but also encouraging signs of improvement.
According to this document, during the year 2023, the Office of Complaints and Denunciations (BPD) received fifty-three (53) complaints and denunciations concerning acts of fraud, mismanagement, scam and land disputes. Among these complaints, thirty-five (35) were filed anonymously, which represents a significant drop compared to the previous year according to pressafrik.
“Anonymous complaints represented 17% in 2023, or 06 points less than the previous year (26.31%),” specifies the note published by Ofnac, thus demonstrating a certain growing confidence of citizens in the process of denunciation.
Detailed analysis of the data also reveals a geographical distribution of complaints, with a significant concentration in the Dakar region, totaling twenty-five (25) complaints, closely followed by Thiès with nine (09) complaints recorded. Other regions of the country presented relatively low complaint rates, and it should be noted that no complaints were recorded from the regions of Kédougou, Sédhiou, Kolda and Matam.
However, a complaint from abroad attracted the attention of Ofnac. This complaint, emanating from the city of Geneva in Switzerland, underlines the transnational scale that cases of fraud and corruption can take, highlighting the need for reinforced international cooperation in the fight once morest these scourges.
