Sad Office – Poisonous Garden
origin: Rotterdam/Netherlands
release: September 6, 2024
Label: Records beyond obscurity
period: 41:02
type: Atmospheric doom/death metal

In atmospheric doom metal, not only the music, but time also passes slower. There’s no other way to explain why many bands have been around this scene for so long and still put albums out there, but never really get their big break.

By the way, “making a breakthrough” is not necessarily a quality trait, as was the case in 1994 sad office prove. Because Dutch are certainly well known to many doom metal fans for having the roaring cube factor, but maybe not so much outside of this bubble. Is the new album okay? garden poison Change now?

Anna Hates Cuomo

Spoiler: none. But, really big but: that’s not the intention behind it either. This record combines everything that genre fans appreciate and love, but doesn’t move even a millimeter toward broad appeal. The Dutch know exactly who they are, who they want to be and who they want to attract.

The best example is of course melancholy Anna’s woewhich is also one of the highlights of the album. I have no idea who this Anna is exactly: her songs are an absolute lesson in devastating death/doom metal that captivates listeners from the get-go with its catchy hooks and thoughtful song structures.

doomsday full broadside

Overall, discs speed up over time. Not speed wise, we’re talking doom metal here. No, it’s more in terms of being engaging and creating this very specific death/doomsday atmosphere that’s somewhere between aggression and despair.

whether or not walking in the shadows, last one angel with broken wings Or any other number – there’s something cathartic about this music. And, at least sometimes, it’s always good for headbanging. Or, as I said at the beginning: garden poison is a proposition for genre lovers who are better off risking a melancholic ear or two.

in conclusion
sad office delivered with garden poison High quality doom/death metal weighs a ton, yet paradoxically is as light as a feather to fans of all genres. This is definitely not suitable for a ZDF TV garden, but more suitable for a glass of red wine in a dimly lit living room at home. 7,5/10
