Officially Starting Today, Japfa Chess Festival Competes in 13 Categories

THE 14th Japfa Chess Festival tournament was officially opened on Saturday (17/8). The event, which took place at the Wisma Serba Guna Building, Jakarta, was opened by the President of the Asian Chess Federation, Sheikh Sultan Khalifa Al Nahyan.

It was recorded that there were 546 chess players from 21 provinces, plus three international chess players, namely two from Malaysia and the Philippines, and one from France, who participated.

The tournament will feature 13 categories and will compete for a total prize of Rp324,900,000. The categories include the Senior Open Category, Senior Women’s Category, Veteran Category, Company/Agency Category, Junior Men’s Category (born up to 2006), Junior Women’s Category (born up to 2006), Open Category (Blitz Chess), Junior Men’s Category (born up to 2010), Junior Women’s Category (born up to 2010), Junior Men’s Category (born up to 2014), Junior Women’s Category (born up to 2014), and a Duel Meet between Indonesian chess players WGM Medina Warda Aulia and WGM Vo Thi Kim Phung from Vietnam.

According to the Chairman of the Tournament Committee, Hendry Hendratno, the opening of the 14th Japfa Chess Festival Tournament is very meaningful for the Indonesian nation and PB Percasi.

“Today, August 17, coincides with Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day and the founding day of PB Percasi 74 years ago,” said Hendry.

On the same occasion, Rachmat Indrajaya, Director of Corporate Affairs of PT Japfa Comfeed Indonesia, expressed Japfa’s commitment to continue supporting chess sports in Indonesia.

As part of JCF 2024, the Japfa Fun Chess Festival was also held, which aims to introduce chess in a fun way for children and families. Last week, the Japfa Street Chess Competition was held, and the Japfa Chess Club and PERCASI also held Simultaneous Chess and Blind Chess. A few days ago, the Japfa Chess Duel Match was held online between GM Susanto Megaranto and GM Novendra Priasmoro.

“Japfa hopes that many talented chess players will emerge and make Indonesia’s name famous in the international arena,” he said.

He added that the 14th Japfa Chess Festival Tournament was used as a trial event by chess players who will compete in the 2024 PON which will take place in Aceh and North Sumatra.

Commenting on the 25-year collaboration with Japfa, PB Percasi General Chairman Utut Adianto expressed his gratitude to Japfa for its many contributions to the sport of chess in Indonesia.

“PB Percasi greatly appreciates PT Japfa’s support for the past 25 years. Many great chess players have emerged from tournaments organized by Japfa, one of whom is GM Susanto Megaranto,” Utut explained.

Utut also added that good cooperation with Japfa can be established because there is a reminder to staff to always be honest and not be involved in fraudulent practices. “They may receive honorariums, but they must maintain integrity. We also always report our work honestly, so that the cooperation between PB Percasi and PT Japfa remains well established,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Secretary General of KONI Pusat, Otnil Mamahid, who was present representing KONI Chairman Marciano Norman, gave his appreciation to PB Percasi’s efforts in developing chess through various tournaments. (Z-6)
