Tunisia – Yesterday, Friday, the Independent High Authority in Tunisia officially announced the victory of President Kais Saied for a second presidential term, after no appeals were registered during the period specified by law against the results of the elections that were held a few days ago.
This came according to a speech by the head of the Independent High Authority for Elections, Farouk Bouaskar, broadcast on Tunisian television.
Bouaskar said that the authority “announces the candidate Kais Saied in the presidential elections on October 6, 2024, as the winner with 90.69 percent of the votes.”
He added, “No objection was registered by the candidates against the preliminary results announced by the authority.”
The period specified for filing appeals against the preliminary results of the presidential elections before the Tunisian Court of Appeal ended on Thursday evening, as the law specifies it as 48 hours from the date of announcing the preliminary results.
Last Monday evening, Bouaskar said, in a press conference to announce the preliminary results of the presidential elections, that Saeed obtained two million, 389,954 votes out of two million, 808,545 who cast their votes; That is, 90.69 percent of voters.
While the candidate Al-Ayashi Zamal (opposition) received 7.35 percent of voters, and Zuhair Al-Maghzawi (supporter of Saied) received 1.97 percent.
Bouaskar noted that the participation rate reached 28.8 percent, which is the lowest percentage in the presidential elections in Tunisia since the 2011 revolution.
In October 2019, Saied won the second round of the elections by winning 72.71 percent of the votes against businessman and media figure Nabil Karoui, who received 27.29 percent, and the participation rate at that time reached 55 percent.
Tunisia has been suffering from a crisis and severe political polarization since Saied began imposing exceptional measures on July 25, 2021, which included dissolving the Judicial Council and Parliament, issuing legislation by presidential decrees, approving a new constitution through a referendum, and holding early parliamentary elections.
