Official: Türkiye, US in talks on building nuclear power plants

ISTANBUL – Turkey is in talks with the United States on building large nuclear power plants and small modular reactors, a senior Turkish energy ministry official said Tuesday.

“The United States is showing serious interest in Turkey’s goal of increasing its nuclear energy capacity and building new power plants,” Ceylan told Reuters at a conference on nuclear power plants.

“We are negotiating with the United States on large power plants and small modular reactors. This is a declaration of intent,” he added.

“Ankara has been talking to us and others about small modular reactors,” Jeff Flake, the U.S. ambassador to Turkey, told Reuters last month.

“We are working with them to try to reduce their dependence (on Russia) in any way possible,” he added.

Ceylan said negotiations were ongoing with South Korea and Russia over a second nuclear power plant planned for the Black Sea region of Sinop, and with China’s SPEC over a third nuclear power plant in the Thrace region of northwestern Turkey.

Russia’s Rosatom continues to build the country’s first 4,800-megawatt nuclear power plant in Turkey’s Akkuyu region on the Mediterranean.

Turkey plans to build three nuclear power plants with four reactors and equip them with small modular reactors with a total capacity of 20,000 megawatts to diversify its electricity production mix.
