Official admission of error!.. The controversial “Cucurella’s hand” shot prompts “UEFA” to make bold changes

Spain won (2-1) over Germany, in extra time, after the regular time ended in a 1-1 draw, in the quarter-finals of the European Nations Cup “Euro 2024”.

This European summit witnessed a controversial scene in the 107th minute, when referee Anthony Taylor refused to award a penalty kick to the German team, despite Marc Cucurella preventing the ball with his hand inside the penalty area, as he considered it unintentional.

Two months after this shot, the Spanish platform “Relevo” reported that the UEFA Referees Committee confirmed in a document that a penalty kick should have been awarded to Germany against Spain after Marc Cucurella’s handball.

The Spanish platform added that the committee informed the international referees that there was an error in that play, and it should have ended with a penalty kick.

The situation was included in the latest review by the committee, which regularly analyses European matches in order to harmonise standards and ensure that referees make the same decisions in similar situations.

The document states: “According to the latest UEFA guidelines, when the hand touches the ball which strictly prevents a shot on goal, in most cases a penalty kick should be awarded, unless the defender’s arm is too close to the body or in contact with the body.”

She added: “In this case, the defender (Cucurella) stopped the shot on goal with his arm, which is not very close to the body, so a penalty kick should have been awarded.”

It is noteworthy that the Spanish national team was crowned champion of Euro 2024 after winning the final match of the competition against its English counterpart with a score of 2-1 last July in Berlin.
