Officer-Involved Shooting in Covington, Virginia: Latest Updates and Investigation by Virginia State Police

COVINGTON, Va. (WDBJ) – Virginia State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Covington that left a man hospitalized.

According to the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Cedar Street around 4:40 p.m. Monday.

Deputies say a K9 alerted its deputy to something regarding the car and the driver drove off, leading deputies on a pursuit. The driver then drove through the backyard of his own home in the 800 block of Beverly Avenue and hit the side of the house, according to deputies.

He then barricaded himself in his home in a standoff, leading deputies to shoot the man; he was apprehended around 4:52 p.m.

The suspect was transported to a hospital for treatment; deputies were not able to give an update on his condition or severity of his injuries.

There were no other reported injuries, according to deputies. The name of the suspect has not been released.

Virginia State Police are investigating the incident.
