The chief conductor of the Vienna ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra, Marin Alsop, has sharply criticized the Cate Blanchett film “Tár”: She feels the film regarding a toxic conductor who lives in a relationship with an orchestra musician “as a woman, as a conductor, alienated as a lesbian”, said Alsop der Sunday Times.
The conductor was initially concerned because many of the film’s details were close to her own biography, said Alsop, who is even named in the film. After seeing the film, instead of being concerned, she was “stunned.” “To have the chance to show a woman in this position (meaning as a conductor, ed.) and then portray her as an abuser breaks my heart,” says Alsop. “I think all women and all feminists should be irritated by this kind of portrayal, because it’s not regarding conductors, it’s regarding women leaders in our society.”
