TRT World’s documentary “Off The Grid”, featuring an episode, won “War Diary in Ukraine”, 44th International Emmy Award in the News & Current Affairs category.
The winners of the news categories were announced at the 44th Annual Emmy Awards for News and Documentary Films yesterday, Wednesday, by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) at the Palladium Times Square in New York City.
TRT World, which represented Turkey in the finals, faced competitors from the United Kingdom, Brazil and Israel.
The Ukraine special, “Ukraine War Diaries,” which won the festival, was written by Mohsen Al-Naimi and Alexander Poliat, with cinematography by Hakan Hukatoglu. The episode showcased the devastating impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
The news documentary, edited by Fatih Kabir and designed by Mahmoud Sami Kavous, dealt with the transformation in the lives of Ukrainian civilians following the Russian army withdrew from some areas liberated by Ukrainian forces.
“Wartime memoirs in Ukraine”
Delves into global narratives through personal journeys, the documentary delivers a carefully crafted, character-driven documentary experience, showcasing compelling human stories from around the world.
In the episode titled “Ukraine War Diary,” the film reveals the effects and harsh realities of the withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine.
Once liberated, war-affected areas become crime scenes, with potential war crimes looming on the horizon. Some civilians find themselves in captivity, others face tragic fates, and many are left to fend for their lives.
Off the Grid follows local and international teams as they embark on a relentless quest for justice, in the face of horrific revelations that stretch across geographies such as Bosnia, Lebanon, Kenya and Ukraine.
Adam Sharp, President and CEO of NATAS, said the awards honor the work of dedicated professionals who work at the highest level in the broadcast journalism and documentary filmmaking professions.
“They pay tribute to journalists who bring us up-to-date reporting on the critical stories of our time, and documentary storytellers who explore important social, cultural and political issues in great depth. NATAS is proud to celebrate on this day the work of this year’s nominees,” he added.
Organizers said they are honoring programming content from “more than 2,300 entries” premiered in 2022, judged by a group of “more than 1,000 professionals” from across the news, TV documentary and digital media industries.
