Hot summer – How the climate crisis is affecting the weather
Vienna (OTS) – Herbert Formayer is Professor of Meteorology and climatology at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna has been dealing with the effects of the climate crisis for 30 years. At “Friday in the arena“, the talk format of oekostrom AG, he joins in oekostrom AG-CEO Ulrich Streibl and moderator Tom Rottenberg on the consequences of global warming in the Mediterranean region and explain the difference between weather and climate.
How is the climate in Austria? “We are currently reaching the limit of what ecosystems can sustain. An example are the spruce forests in the lowlands: Due to the high temperature level and the pest infestation, the spruce stands cannot be preserved. With glaciers retreating and permafrost thawing, there are already massive changes in the high mountains.” explains meteorologist Herbert Formayer.
Also socioeconomic systems are in trouble as a result of the climate crisis; according to Formayer, a major problem is the heat stress in the cities: “In the hot summers of 2015 and 2018, there were more heat-related deaths than traffic deaths. Heat is a social problem, because the main burden hits people in poorly insulated homes. At temperatures above 35 degrees, you can no longer stand it in these apartments.” The Mediterranean could develop into a drought hotspot: “We have to assume that large parts of the Mediterranean region will experience desertification, as we know it from North Africa.”
How can the climate crisis be stopped? Formayer sees the solution in a profound transformation of society and energy systems as well as massive decarbonization, i.e. a low-carbon world, and that within a very short time. In order to achieve these goals, the social pressure on politics must be increased, said Formayer in his Tip on Friday: “For many measures require legal requirements. Majorities are required for politicians to react. The pressure must clearly come from the population.”
