With the players from ICE champion Salzburg, the defenders David Reinbacher and Thimo Nickl as well as striker Oliver Achermann, Austria’s national ice hockey team is going into the test matches against the Czech Republic. The six-time world champion, who has NHL experience, will be a guest in Vienna’s Steffl Arena on Thursday (6:30 p.m.), and the return game will take place in Brno on Saturday (4 p.m./both live ORF Sport+). ÖEHV head coach Roger Bader wants to work on the system again.

In the test doubles against Germany, the Austrians were able to celebrate a 0:2 victory after a penalty shoot-out. According to Bader, the Czech Republic is “another increase in level. This forces us to take the next step”. The Swiss is expecting a fast and technically strong opponent. The Czechs will play in Group B at the upcoming World Cup (May 12-28). Austria is in Group A in action.

With goalkeeper Karel Vejmelka (Arizona Coyotes), defenders Jiricek David and Svozil Stanislav (Columbus Blue Jackets) and striker Martin Kaut (San Jose Sharks), the traditionally strong ice hockey nation has the first four NHL professionals in the squad. Austria have already met their neighbors 20 times, and the outsider celebrated once: On May 22 last year, a 2-1 nP in the World Cup group stage in Tampere (Finland).

After the tests against the Czech Republic, two more games against Slovakia (Thursday, May 4th / Kapfenberg and Saturday, May 6th / Trencin) are still on the program for the ÖEHV selection in the coming week. The World Championships will then take place in Tampere (Group A) and Riga (Group B).
