The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) published this Thursday, October 12, a report on unemployment, employment and participation rates in its member countries with figures as of August of this year.

Colombia, which has belonged to this bloc since April 2020, registered an unemployment rate of 9.5% in August 2023, according to the OECD, a figure much higher than the average of the countries in this bloc (4.8%).

According to the report, Colombia is the third country with the highest unemployment rate in the OECD, following Spain (11.5%) and Greece (10.9%).

It should be noted that the other Latin American nations that are part of the OECD, such as Mexico (2.8%), Chile (8.6% as of July 2023), Costa Rica (8.8% as of July 2023) also have a unemployment lower than that of Colombia.

The OECD report indicates that Japan (2.7%), the Czech Republic (2.5%) and South Korea (2.4%) are the countries with the lowest unemployment rates.

According to the OECD, the unemployment rate increased in five countries (Sweden, the United States, Colombia, Estonia and Luxembourg), did not change in 14 and decreased in 13.

Regarding the employed population, the OECD indicated that Colombia has a rate of 63.9%, higher than that of Chile (63.1%), Costa Rica (59.3%) or Mexico (63.4%). . However, as expected, the figure is far from many of the developed countries that are part of this block.

The document indicates that Iceland (84.7%), the Netherlands (82.5%) and Switzerland (80.7%) have the highest employment rate of the OECD countries.
