TOKYO — A high-ranking official from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government revealed to the Mainichi Shimbun on November 6 that the anticipated budget for the creation of “Odaiba Fountain,” projected to be one of the world’s largest fountains, is estimated at an impressive 2.64 billion yen (approximately $17.2 million).
According to officials from the metropolitan government, the “Odaiba Fountain,” which is its provisional name, will be strategically placed in the scenic water area of Odaiba Seaside Park, located in Minato Ward. This grand fountain will feature a dual structure, showcasing one spout soaring to a height of 150 meters, while the other will span a remarkable width of 250 meters. Notably, the broader fountain will elegantly incorporate Someiyoshino cherry blossoms, which are emblematic of the capital. Spectators can look forward to a fountain show that will be artistically framed by iconic landmarks such as the Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Tower.
According to independent estimates, the fountain is anticipated to attract a staggering 30 million visitors annually. This figure includes not only those who will enjoy the fountain from nearby shorelines but also individuals gathered in the surrounding areas. The project is expected to generate substantial economic benefits, with a projected ripple effect amounting to 9.8 billion yen (around $63.8 million).
Construction activities for the fountain are slated to commence in fiscal 2025, with a target completion date set for the end of March 2026. The anticipated maintenance and management expenses are estimated to be in the range of 150 to 200 million yen ($977,000 to $1.3 million) each year.
The local community has been vocal about the need for revitalization efforts, particularly following the significant decline in visitors to the waterfront area caused by the coronavirus pandemic. As part of their recovery strategy, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is keen to position the fountain as a standout tourist attraction, aimed at reinvigorating the area and fostering a vibrant atmosphere. A Tokyo official expressed, “We would like to consider specific ways to utilize the fountain so that many people can enjoy it.”
During a Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly meeting held in September, a senior official indicated that funding for the fountain’s construction and maintenance would primarily come from proceeds derived from land sales and other revenue streams, while emphasizing that detailed cost deliberations are currently underway.
