October Eviction Drama: Raymond Hereng Threatens to Attack Himself and Set Fire to Home

2023-11-07 12:03:00

Raymond Hereng was evicted from his home this Wednesday morning. The Wavrien feared this expulsion and when the bailiff showed up around 8:30 a.m., Raymond Hereng threatened to throw himself out of the first floor window of his accommodation. Some even said he wanted to set fire to his home.

Threats taken seriously by the Wavre police who were present for the eviction. Given the threats, she set up a security perimeter around the house, located on the Chaussée de Louvain.

“We were told that there was a weapon inside but when we searched the building, we found nothing,” said lead inspector Lionel Cossé.

It was ultimately the paramedics, while the firefighters had also come down with a large ladder, who managed to make the octogenarian see reason and join him upstairs using a ladder.

From rats

“He is a very kind, very cultured man who made a career in the banking sector,” says a neighbor who regularly came across him while walking her dog. “He also sent me two letters which I gave to the police . He also showed me photos of his accommodation, it had become really unsanitary. There were rats and he only lived upstairs where he had no heating or hot water.”

Raymond Hereng also called us because he found his expulsion “unfair”. He also told us regarding the conflict between him and the owner of the accommodation, the unsanitary conditions of the accommodation, the presence of rats… He no longer wanted to pay and the eviction procedure was started. A drama of isolation… “Yes, it’s true that he lived in very difficult conditions. It was abominable even considering the photos he showed me,” the neighbor continues. “I think he has suffered a lot from not seeing his friends near Ottignies since he no longer has a car. And then Covid and the isolation that it caused didn’t help anything.”

Raymond Hereng would not have been married. He would just have a nephew “and his dog who he cares regarding very much”. Dog which was handed over to an acquaintance while the octogenarian was finally taken by ambulance for a health examination.

“It will be taken care of by the CPAS of Wavre (Editor’s note: two representatives of which were present)”, indicates Lionel Cossé. Something which, at the time of writing these lines, had not yet been confirmed to us.
