On October 6, 2023, the fourteenth edition of National Carers’ Day is organized, at the initiative of the Collectif Je t’aide. Hundreds of events are organized throughout France for this day. This day is an opportunity to raise awareness regarding the role of caregivers and the support systems they can benefit from.

National Caregivers Day 2023 “Let’s help caregivers take care of themselves”

THE caregivers occupy a major place in support for sick and/or dependent people. National Caregivers Day is an opportunity to shine the spotlight on these family caregivers and informal caregivers who represent irreplaceable support for millions of sick people, dependent elderly people or even children or adults with disabilities. For this day, hundreds of events are organized throughout France: debates, conferences, thematic workshops, open days, discussions around coffee, film screenings, awareness-raising actions, or more sports or meditation sessions.

The Collective I Help You, created in 2015, is the organizing structure of this day. It brings together 26 member structures and has set itself three objectives:

  • Advancing the rights of caregivers;
  • Increase awareness of the role and importance of caregivers;
  • Mobilize society to get involved with caregivers.

46% of caregivers do not take care of their health

In France, there are currently around 11 million caregivers according to the Collective I help you. They bring together all the people who support people losing their autonomy, sick people or people with disabilities on a daily basis. Family caregivers or close caregivers are spouses, parents, children, relatives, neighbors, etc. According to the Je t’aide Collective, almost half of caregivers do not take care of their health, hence the choice of the theme for this 2023 edition: “Let’s help caregivers take care of themselves “. The national day will be an opportunity to raise awareness among caregivers of the need to take care of their health and of the support and support solutions from which they can benefit.

In recent years, aid and measures have been put in place to support and support caregivers, in particular:

  • The caregiver’s daily allowance;
  • Respite assistance;
  • Tax assistance;
  • Access to training programs.

Aid and support systems to continue helping

The caregiver’s daily allowance makes it possible to obtain replacement income for caregivers who reduce or stop their professional activity to help a person with a disability or loss of autonomy. Respite assistance is reserved for caregivers of elderly people benefiting from the personalized autonomy allowance. It offers solutions so that caregivers can rest or free up time, for example to take care of their health:

  • Day or night reception of the person being cared for;
  • Temporary accommodation in an establishment or family home;
  • A relay at home.

Of the caregiver cafes are also set up in many regions to allow caregivers to exchange and support each other. It is essential that caregivers can take care of their health, recharge their batteries and rest to better help people with disabilities, elderly people losing their independence or the sick.
