October 13: World Thrombosis Day

2023-10-11 08:00:24

In France, each year, between 50,000 and 100,000 new cases of venous thrombosis are diagnosed. October 13, 2023 will be the 10th edition of World Thrombosis Day, a global awareness campaign launched by the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. On this occasion, a new website and a new theme “take action once morest thrombosis” will be launched.

Venous thrombosis and arterial thrombosis

Thrombosis is the formation of a clot in a blood vessel : a vein (vein thrombosis) or an artery (arterial thrombosis). Partial or complete obstruction of the blood vessel by the blood clot blocks blood flow and leads to an increase in blood pressure in the vessel. The blood clot can also travel to other vessels and cause serious or even fatal complications.

The most common thromboses are venous thromboses, which affect both superficial and deep veins. The venous thrombosis best known to the general public is phlebitis which develops in a vein in the leg. If the blood clot travels to the pulmonary artery, a pulmonary embolism develops, a potentially fatal complication of venous thrombosis.

“Act once morest thrombosis”

The main objective of the world thrombosis day is to raise awareness among as many people as possible regarding these often little-known pathologies, but whose global burden is significant and growing over the years. For this tenth edition, the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis has chosen a new theme “take action once morest thrombosis” which will remain relevant until 2025. At the same time, the website dedicated to the world day has benefited from a complete overhaul to become a real information center on clots blood, available in several languages for greater accessibility.

To go to the new website

The world day aims to mobilize as many people as possible, patients, relatives, health and prevention stakeholders, but also the general public on all themes of thrombosis:

  • Awareness ;
  • Education;
  • Prevention ;
  • Treatments.

Everyone can act to reduce the risk of thrombosis

How to prevent thrombosis? A better diet, the fight once morest a sedentary lifestyle and the practice of sporting activity are key factors. How to recognize the first signs of thrombosis? It all depends on the location of the thrombosis, because any vessel in the body can be affected by a clot. For the most common venous thrombosis, phlebitis, the first signs are:

  • calf pain,
  • a sensitive calf,
  • swelling of the ankle or foot,
  • the appearance of redness or, on the contrary, discoloration,
  • a feeling of warmth.

Phlebitis must be treated as quickly as possible to avoid the development of a complication such as pulmonary embolism. Thromboses can in fact lead to death or serious following-effects if they are not diagnosed and treated in time.
