The importance of the oceans for the planet is one of the agendas of the CEO Water Mandate, a special initiative that takes place from September 17th to 21st, within the 78th General Assembly of the United Nations, since, according to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development initiative, more than 70% of the planet is covered by water. The organization also highlights that the oceans are responsible for at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen.
As a result, most of terrestrial biodiversity is in the oceans, which is also the main source of protein for more than a billion people in the world. The Oceans Decade points out that economic issues are linked to the large proportions of water on the globe, given that, By 2030, there will be around 40 million people working in ocean-related sectors.
In a breakdown by continent, according to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL), this region alone has more than 27% of its population in coastal areas, with the sea occupying more territory than land in most parts countries, especially in the Caribbean.
Although it is fundamental for the existence of biodiversity, imbalances alert world leaders, in different sectors, and draw attention to urgent measures. The global initiative shows concern regarding the supply of the oceans, given the depletion of 90% of large marine fish species and the destruction of 50% of coral reefs.
Plastic pollution is another point that is gaining attention in the debates. Data from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), cited in the report “Drowning in plastics – marine litter and plastic waste vital graphics”record an increase in this waste in aquatic ecosystems, which might reach 29 million tons in 2040.
For the founder and main executive of the Latin American Quality Institute (LAQI), Daniel Maximilian Da Costa, the topic is not just interesting for a small group or sector, but for the whole world, since water is vital for all action. He emphasizes that the scenarios in which the oceans find themselves are signs that measures need to be taken.
“This thematic axis is linked to survival, even more so given the information that 50% of oxygen comes from the oceans. To this end, as a practical way, we will be in the CEO Water Mandate presenting data and information that drive the adoption of paths that highlight the importance of the oceans and all the biodiversity that depends on them”, he concludes.
