The rescue ship “Ocean Viking” of the aid organization SOS Mediterranée arrived in the Italian city of Naples on Monday with 439 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean Sea. Among other things, 90 unaccompanied minors, four pregnant women and six disabled people disembarked, the authorities in Naples said.

The rescue ship was assigned to the port of Genoa in northern Italy on Saturday. Because of the bad weather in Liguria, the region around Genoa, it was later decided that the “Ocean Viking” should dock in Naples. Italian authorities had detained the “Ocean Viking” for ten days last month due to alleged safety deficiencies. She was only allowed to set sail again on July 21.

Again and again rescue ships are fixed in the Mediterranean Sea. Italy accuses the organizations of violating a decree that requires the ships to call at a port assigned to them after each deployment. In practice, these ports are often hundreds of kilometers away from the rescue site.

107,530 people have arrived in Italy by sea since the beginning of the year. In the same period of 2022, there were 52,954. Most of the migrants who have arrived come from Guinea, Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire) and Tunisia.

The Mediterranean Sea is the deadliest migration route in the world, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). According to UN estimates, more than 2,000 people have died trying to escape across the Mediterranean since the beginning of the year.
