“Old fishing lines, nets, hooks and toxic fishing sinker pose a serious threat to marine life,” explains the foundation. The 18 participants indeed encountered crabs, lobsters and fish entangled in the waste. The animals still alive were carefully released by the divers.
The latter were rewarded for their work with great experiences: they discovered young seahorses with short beaks. “They hovered in the water column or sometimes clung to pieces of algae,” explains the foundation, adding that if they might be seen so well, it is partly thanks to the calm weather of the latter days. The Dutch foundation has been organizing such expeditions for years. She claims to have already collected a total of more than 100,000 kilos of waste from wrecks.
