Occupational Exposures and Ovarian Cancer: Professions at High Risk Revealed

A recent study warned people who practice certain trades. Indeed, these professions would be more likely to cause ovarian cancer. Here are which ones.

No less than 5320 cases of ovarian cancer were diagnosed in France during the year 2020. Age or hormonal treatments are among the confirmed risk factors. Others, however, are not yet, but researchers are seriously looking into it. The 2018 report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, referred to by the Léon Bernard Cancer Center, revealed in particular that 1.3% of ovarian cancers might be attributable to occupational exposures. The link between these exhibitions? Asbestos.

The journal Occupational & Environmental Medicine recently published a study whose results point in this direction. Indeed, they prove that all professions are not equal with respect to the risk of suffering from ovarian cancer. Some professions are therefore more at risk than others. The study was carried out thanks to the PRevention of OVArian Cancer in Quebec (PROVAQ) cohort with the help of participants aged 18 to 79, recruited from seven Montreal hospitals between 2010 and 2016 following being diagnosed with epithelial cancer of the the ovary.

Ovarian cancer: which professions are most at risk?

The study in question identified beauticians, hairdressers or accountants as being most at risk of developing ovarian cancer. The press release of the study indeed explained that “Working for 10 or more years as a hairdresser, barber, beautician and related roles was associated with a three times higher risk, whilea job for 10 years or more in accounting was associated with a doubling of risk, and working in construction with almost three times the risk”.

The study later reported that The long-term work in theclothing industry, including embroiderywas associated with an 85% increased risk of developing the disease, while work in sales or retail was associated with increased risks, respectively, of 45% and 59%. Moreover, the researchers demonstrated that the risk was greater when there was cumulative exposure to certain agents over several years. In particular, they talked regarding talcum powder, ammonia, propellants, gasoline or bleach.
