Obtaining French Nationality: The Story of a Belgian Couple’s Struggle for Citizenship

It’s quite a story that Martine and Vincent, a Belgian couple who have lived in France for more than 20 years now, are experiencing. In fact, they have worked and paid their taxes in France for many years and now want to obtain nationality to be able to vote.

However, Vincent and Martine saw their request for naturalization refused by the French administration. For what ? Because they cannot prove that they speak French well enough… even though it is their mother tongue.

We sent all our diplomas, in French, since we both studied in Belgium, in Brussels“, explains Martine. “After sending these diplomas, my husband sent a French language aptitude result that he had received 15 years ago, and despite this, we are told that we cannot sufficiently prove that we speaks French well so our file is rejected“.

The Belgian couple must take a written and oral exam to prove their mastery of the language, but there is a problem: the test will take place in February, which is far too late to respond within the deadline to the appeal they have filed.

Martine has no shortage of words to describe this situation: “It’s ludicrous, stupid… We feel unfairly rejected“, she explains to us. For its part, the prefecture explains to our colleagues at BFM that it rejected their request for “production of non-compliant documents” and specifies that “acquiring French nationality is not a trivial process“.

According to them, the refusal was therefore not due to poor knowledge of the language but simply to an incomplete file.
