Obliging the leaders of the country to move to Turniške would violate their rights, says the president

“Honestly, I don’t really care what’s on offer, I think it’s primarily a violation of a person’s right to live where they want.” Did something bad happen that the president lived on Pūčkiori Street this term? The entire infrastructure is perfectly secured, there is no need to allocate all the funds for the repair of Turniškii, we are saving money from the budget”, said the head of the country in an interview with LNK news on Wednesday.

This is what he asserted in the Seimas this week when he started considering the initiative of conservative Matas Maldeikis to oblige the president and the prime minister to live in official residences. They are located on the outskirts of Vilnius, in Turniškės, in a closed fenced and protected area.

G. Nausėda, who was elected president in 2019, refused to move to Turniške and stayed in his house in Pavilny, at the Pučkiori outcrop.

The presidency then said that such a decision was made after assessing the cost of renovating the residence.

M. Maldeikis asserts that such behavior of politicians shows disrespect for the country’s institutions to which they are elected or appointed, in addition, there are difficulties in ensuring their proper protection.

Prime Minister I. Šimonytė moved to the government residence in Turniškės in January 2021. Commenting on the proposal this week, she insisted she made the decision not because she “really likes it” but because the state residence is primarily intended to facilitate the work of the Executive Protection Service.

At that time, her predecessor, Saulius Skvernelis, did not move to the residence, he lived in his house in the village of Smigliai in the Vilnius district.
