Obituary: Iroel Sánchez Espinosa, Ideologue of the Cuban Dictatorship, Passes Away at 58

Iroel Sánchez Espinosa died this Thursday followingnoon at the age of 58 in Havana, Cuba. Sánchez was considered an ideologue of the propaganda apparatus of the Cuban dictatorship. On the island he was recognized as a journalist, political analyst, writer, editor and audiovisual producer.

Today the Cuban Revolution has lost a son who devoted to it and to the socialist ideal until his last energies. As an indefatigable intellectual, Iroel Sánchez leaves behind a great and valuable work and a model of a total revolutionary. A heartfelt hug to the family, colleagues and friends, ”the dictator wrote on his Twitter account Miguel Diaz-Canel.

Sánchez Espinosa directed the Abril Publishing House and was president of the Cuban Book Institute and the Organizing Committee of the Havana International Book Fair.

The Cuban Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Communications adds that Sánchez Espinosa “was one of the founders of the digital cultural magazine La Jiribilla and actively participated in the creation of the Network of Intellectuals, Artists and Social Fighters in Defense of Humanity.”

From the different media apparatuses and institutions of the dictatorship, Iroel Sánchez was an essential piece to control “thought in the networks” from the Internet.

Either in his texts that he published on the internet or in the television program La Pupila Asombrada, Sánchez attacked any political or intellectual activist who questioned the Cuban dictatorship.

Due to his leading role within the propaganda and censorship apparatus of the Castro dictatorship, he was included in 2017 on the list of “Cuban repressors” of the Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba (FDHC), who considered him an asset “collaborator of Section 3 of the counterintelligence of the Ministry of the Interior, in charge of monitoring the cultural, artistic and academic sector in Cuba”.

The Cuban playwright Yunior García Aguilera, persecuted by the Cuban dictatorship, pointed out on Twitter Sánchez’s methods once morest dissent.

Iroel Sánchez, a Castroist Taliban, one of the most sinister ideologues and architects of repression and censorship in Cuba, has died. Iroel was even hated by the majority of the intellectuals and cultural figures who still sympathize with the regime,” García Aguilera said.
