Obesity is a risk factor for covid-19 at any age, warns Public Health

Asunción, IP Agency.- During a virtual conversation, the Ministry of Public Health addressed several issues related to obesity in times of the new coronavirus pandemic, considering that it constitutes a risk factor for people who have this condition.

The panelists agreed that poor diet, sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity are triggers of obesity, which can appear even at an early age, leading to hypertension, diabetes, respiratory diseases and various types of cancer.

They warned that this chronic condition is associated with the highest percentage of premature deaths and disability in adulthood. Likewise, this disease in childhood causes damage to the body that produces chronic non-communicable diseases in adult life.

On the occasion of the conversation called “Obesity in times of the coronavirus pandemic” it was indicated that it increasingly affects young people and young children.

The virtual meeting was organized by the Directorate of Non-Communicable Disease Surveillance, whose objective was to provide guidance to all those people who have this health condition or other associated risk factors, taking into account that as a result of the epidemiological situation, sometimes makes it difficult to go to health services.

The online activity was coordinated by Dr. Claudia Sánchez, from the Department of Prevention and Control of Risk Factors, dependent on the Directorate of Surveillance of Non-Communicable Diseases, who emphasized that confinement, stress, a sedentary lifestyle and the adoption of other habits Unhealthy can lead to alterations in the body and consequently suffer decompensation.

To reduce this risk, on the occasion, we talked regarding the complications that overweight people can develop from covid-19, the care to take into account, recommendations for chronic patients, by Dr. Sofía Hernegard, doctor, specialist in endocrinology and metabolism.

For her part, Bethania Machuca, nutritionist from the Non-Communicable Diseases Surveillance Directorate, taught how to achieve a healthy plate to prevent and treat excess weight and chronic pathologies. She explained in a practical way how to measure food portions and shared a meal plan for weight loss.

Finally, Dr. Mirta Ortiz, pediatrician, specialist in physical activity, addressed the importance of physical activity in the treatment of obesity; the most appropriate exercises for this type of patient and tips for doing physical activity from home.
