“Obesity doubles risk of endometrial cancer”
(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Seonggan Han = Obesity may nearly double the risk of endometrial cancer, a new study finds.
Endometrial cancer is a disease in which tissue in the uterus proliferates abnormally, and overweight, early menarche (before 12 years of age), and late menopause (following 51 years of age) are known risk factors. It occurs most frequently in women in developed countries and occurs mainly following the age of 55.
Emma Hazelwood’s research team from the Department of Cancer Epidemiology at the University of Bristol, UK, analyzed data from regarding 120,000 women in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Germany, Poland and Sweden, and found this fact. HealthDay News) reported on the 21st.
Of these, regarding 13,000 were endometrial cancer patients.
Overall, for every 5 points increase in body-mass index (BMI) from normal, the risk of endometrial cancer increased by 88%, the researchers found.
BMI is a number obtained by dividing body weight (kg) by the square of height (m). are classified
The researchers also analyzed 14 factors that may explain the association between obesity and endometrial cancer.
Among them, fasting insulin and testosterone levels, which are associated with insulin resistance, are thought to be associated with an increased risk of endometrial cancer, the researchers said.
There is also evidence that hypercholesterolemia, which is high in blood cholesterol, also affects the risk of endometrial cancer, the researchers said.
This suggests that therapies targeting these hormones may help reduce the risk of endometrial cancer, the researchers said.
For example, metformin, a diabetes drug that targets these hormones, might be one means, the researchers point out.
The results of this study were published in the latest issue of the online scientific journal ‘BioMed Central-Medicine’.
