ÖVP budget spokesman surprised at the ignorance of the SPÖ governor in the handling of crisis funds – disasters know no parties
Vienna (OTS) – “Now is the time to help and not to fetch political change. And this federal government is helping the affected regions and people,” said the Carinthian ÖVP budget spokesman Gabriel Obernosterer today, Tuesday, when SPÖ Governor Peter Kaiser called for more money from the federal government. Obernosterer refers to the adequate endowment of the disaster fund: “The federal government immediately promised rapid financial support. There is enough money to help the people in the country during this difficult time!”
The deputy is somewhat surprised at Kaiser’s ignorance: “The SPÖ governor apparently does not know how the funds made available in the disaster fund are processed. Disaster relief is the responsibility of the federal states. All funds flow 100 percent through the country. Only what the state applies for is also paid out by the federal government.” Obernosterer recalls the perfect cooperation between the federal government, state and municipalities during the floods four years ago in the Lesachtal or last year in Arriach and meetings. “If everyone makes an effort, we’ll be able to do it once more,” says the Carinthian.
So how does the financing actually work: For private individuals, 60 percent of the money comes from the federal government and 40 percent from the state. For municipal and state roads, 50 percent comes from the federal government and for torrent control, 62 percent of the money comes from the federal government. The state of Carinthia must submit the application itself. “This federal government under Chancellor Karl Nehammer is helping. And that is what is asked now. Disasters know no parties. Let’s stick together at this time, just as we have done in the past,” the deputy concludes. (Ending)
