OAS fails to reach consensus to approve resolution on Venezuela

He Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) failed to obtain the necessary votes to publish a resolution urging the disclosure of the minutes of the presidential elections in Venezuela.

The measure failed to pass by just one vote. 18 votes were needed in favor of the resolution; however, 17 votes were obtained, none against, 11 abstentions and five absences.

Argentina, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, USA, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Suriname and Uruguay.

Abstentions came from countries such as the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Grenada, Honduras, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Antigua and Barbuda.

Dominica, Mexico, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela were absent.

The resolution announced the peaceful participation of voters on July 28 and requested the National Electoral Council to publish the voting records of the electionsThe document also called for guaranteeing the right to free and peaceful demonstration.

Despite not obtaining the necessary votes, the OAS, from the office of the secretary general, Luis Almagro, Election manipulation was denounced on Tuesday.

“Throughout this electoral process, the Venezuelan regime has been applying its repressive scheme, complemented by actions aimed at completely distorting the electoral result, making that result available for the most aberrant manipulation.”the text highlighted.
