OAS condemns Ecuadorian police raid on Mexican Embassy

Through a resolution, the OAS rejected the actions by the Ecuadorian security forces that violently entered the Mexican Embassy in their country to arrest former vice president Jorge Glas.

Following an extraordinary session at the UN headquarters in Washington, 29 delegations voted in favour of speaking out against the controversial event. Only El Salvador abstained.

The document indicates the rejection of “the intrusion into the facilities of the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador and the acts of violence committed against the integrity and dignity of the diplomatic staff of the Mission”.

Also, a “calls upon all States to respect and fulfil their obligations and responsibilities under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and to ensure that the inviolability of diplomatic seats and their personnel is respected without exception”.

This Monday, the President of Ecuador Daniel Noboareferred to the issue as a “complex and unprecedented situation,” in which the police entered the diplomatic structure without permission to seize the former official, accused of corruption.

Noboa indicated that he had to take “exceptional decisions to protect national security, the rule of law and the dignity of a people that rejects any type of impunity for criminals, delinquents or narco-terrorists”.

Through social media, the president of Ecuador clarified that, despite the situation, is “willing to resolve any differences” with Mexico; however, he maintained that “justice is not negotiable.”
