OAS calls for an extraordinary meeting to address Venezuela’s election results

The Organization of American States (OAS)based in Washingtoncalled an extraordinary meeting to address the results of the presidential elections in Venezuelaquestioned by the opposition and several countries in the region.

The Permanent Council session, which will take place on Wednesday, was convened at the request of twelve member countries, including all Latin American governments that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro ordered today to withdraw their diplomatic personnel from Caracas, Efe highlights.

So far, the organization has not commented on the elections, amid rejection by the international community and the Venezuelan opposition of the results delivered by the National Electoral Council (CNE). which today gave victory to the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro.

The Maduro regime today demanded Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, Dominican Republic and Uruguay to “immediately” withdraw their representatives from Venezuelan territory, in retaliation for having expressed concern about the conduct of the presidential elections.

The CNE today officially declared victory to the current president, in power since 2013, with 51.2% of the votes, the same result it gave on Sunday night when 80% of the votes had been counted and there were still more than two million votes left to count.

Meanwhile, the standard-bearer of the majority opposition, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutiaobtained 44.2% of the votes, according to the first and only public report of the CNE, which did not specify which candidates received the 2,394,268 votes that were not reported.

Several countries on the continent, including the United States, have already demanded that the Venezuelan government publish the voting records and carry out a “transparent” recount.
