ÖAMTC warns drivers: “The Bavarians are coming”

The Tyrolean transit routes, especially the Fernpass and the Brenner Autobahn, recorded the majority of delays in travel traffic during the first holiday weekends. “Up until now, things have remained relatively quiet on the Tauern Autobahn (A10). But the real acid test is only coming up in the next few weekends. We are moving out again to remove broken-down vehicles from sensitive areas as quickly as possible. The A10 should remain open to two lanes in the interests of the neighboring communities,” explains ÖAMTC breakdown driver Florian Thaler about his weekend deployment.

Increase in return traffic to the north

The flow of people returning north began over the past few weekends. Holidaymakers who are taking advantage of the pre-season are already on their way back. In addition, the holidays are already ending in the first German federal states.

The most important traffic jam routes

  • A2, South Motorway, construction site areas Velden, Bad Sankt Leonhard – Wolfsberg
  • A4, East Motorway, Nickelsdorf border crossing
  • A8, Innkreis Autobahn, construction site area Ort im Innkreis
  • A9, Pyhrn motorway, toll stations Bosruck and Gleinalm tunnel, oncoming traffic areas Inzersdorf – Klaus, Treglwang – Trieben, border crossing Spielfeld
  • A10, Tauern Autobahn, in the Salzburg area, construction site area Reittunnel and Eben im Pongau, in front of the toll station St. Michael im Lungau, as well as in front of the Katschberg and Tauern tunnels
  • A11, Karawanks Autobahn, especially before the Karawanks Tunnel
  • A13, Brenner motorway, along the entire route, especially before the Schönberg toll station
  • S6, Semmering expressway, single-lane two-way traffic area Gloggnitz – Spital am Semmering

Traffic jams in the surrounding regions

In Bavaria in the area of Großes Deutsches Eck (A8/A93) and in South Tyrol on the Brenner motorway (A22) you have to expect traffic jams and delays.

Travellers must also be patient at the border crossings between Slovenia and Croatia, in both directions, at the Gruskovje/Macelj crossing on the direct connection from Maribor to Zagreb or at the crossings between Istria and Slovenia.

Drive with concentration in hot weather

ÖAMTC traffic psychologist Marion Seidenberger advises starting the journey – if possible – early in the morning or in the evening, when temperatures are at least a little lower. The vehicle should not be cooled down too much during the journey, as large temperature differences when getting in and out put a strain on the body. The traffic psychologist’s other tips: stay calm, drink plenty of non-alcoholic liquids and eat light food.
