The seat shell then detached from the base and hurled along with the 15- kilogram dummy forward, which could lead to serious injuries in a real accident.”
The test was similar for the seat installed in the direction of travel: here too, according to the ÖAMTC, the support leg broke in the frontal crash. The forces released tore the plastic housing of the base apart and caused the dummy to be thrown far up and forward.
Higher requirements for consumer protection tests
The frontal impact tests carried out during the test were based on the Euro NCAP crash tests in terms of accident severity. The Society of European Transport Ministries, Automobile Clubs and Insurance Associations based in Brussels carries out crash tests on new types of automobiles and assesses their safety. “Significantly higher forces act on the products than in the legally required approval tests for child seats,” explained the ÖAMTC. “However, studies in recent years have shown that many products offer good protection even with the higher requirements of the consumer protection test.”
